Autonomy is about a person’s ability to act on his or her own values and interests. To do these things, the autonomous person must have a sense of self-worth and self-respect. Self-knowledge is also important, including a well-developed understanding of what matters to him or her. This is important for stable relationships. Autonomy and independence become less of an issue because you share your goals and dreams with that other person, and you don’t want to change direction and take a break on your own. You’re in it together, and (paradoxically) together, you are independent. You are two people with the freedom to love one another.

Here are five tips to help you keep your independence while maintaining a healthy relationship:

  • Have your own space. Being together doesn’t mean you have to give up being alone.
  • Keep your own hobbies & interests.
  • Stand your ground.
  • Speak openly when you disagree.
  • Celebrate yourself.
